I am a special education teacher at a grade 7-12 school in the heart of the Indianapolis. Over 90% of our students live below the poverty line, more than 1/3 have special learning and behavioral needs and most are reading 3+ years below grade level. There are great challenges ahead for us, no doubt, but our students are ready to learn and our teachers are eager to teach! While our special education team is focused on teaching students in the least-restrictive environment possible, there are times when our kids need a small-group setting or one-on-one attention. My central task this quarter is to create a top-notch resource classroom - a calm, structured learning environment with a complete set of materials and supports in place to ensure that special education students have access to every tool they need to be successful. These are only my first weeks at this school, but already I have fallen in love with these kids!
