In order to develop successful high school students and promote the behaviors that generate outstanding community members, our core ninth grade staff has implemented a positive incentive-based program that is utilized by every ninth grade staff member and teacher. In return for exhibiting positive behaviors, students will be rewarded with a tangible item of their choice. As students progress through their day, they have the opportunity to earn points for behavior like participating in class, assisting other students, or staying on task. During a pandemic, many students have lost the desire to fully participate in school. A waning desire, compounded with sporadic attendance has created a climate in our urban school that we are eager to change. We hope that by recognizing and encouraging our virtual and in-person students consistently and with tangible rewards will help enforce the types of behaviors that will help them flourish as older students. Students have access to an app that allows them to track and later spend the points that they are rewarded. Items in our school store will vary by point value and will consist of items that students have specifically requested that they may not otherwise ever receive. These are items like iPads, gaming headphones, art supplies, or sports equipment. When students have accumulated the necessary points for an item that they are looking at, they will pay for the item with their points and a teacher will deliver that item to the student. Ours kids are so excited about this opportunity that we are eager to begin fulfilling transaction orders.
