Series like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dog Man, and Goosebumps help students practice comprehension, character analysis, making predictions, identifying themes, and understanding plot development. Graphic novels and high-interest chapter books also support reluctant readers by building reading stamina and confidence. Students are learning how to discuss books with peers, make connections to characters, and think critically about what they read. Most importantly, these books are showing students that reading can be fun, engaging, and something they choose to do on their own. Reading in our classroom is active, student-centered, and full of excitement. Students have opportunities to independently choose books that interest them, read quietly, partner read, and talk about books with classmates. We use our classroom library throughout the day during independent reading, small groups, and reading response activities. It has created a classroom environment where students genuinely look forward to reading and sharing recommendations with one another. Several students who previously struggled to stay engaged during reading time are now some of the first students reaching for books. One student who rarely finished a book has already completed multiple Diary of a Wimpy Kid books and proudly tells classmates about his favorite parts. Another group of students has become completely invested in the Goosebumps series and loves making predictions about what will happen next. Seeing students excited to read, laughing together over books, and building confidence as readers has been one of the best parts of this project. These books have helped students see themselves as readers, and that is incredibly meaningful.","fullyFundedDate":1778008881989,"projectUrl":"project/library-of-our-dreams/10250108/","projectTitle":"Library of Our Dreams","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hughes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9055909_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1684606730951","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9055909"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_99523","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":339,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":45,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":20,"percentWhite":59,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":5,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":10,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"11.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.4,"schoolId":99523,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Gateway Science Academy - Smiley on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Gateway Science Academy - Smiley","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/missouri/missouri-department-of-education/gateway-science-academy-of-st-louis/99523"}
