Students come into BGU after a long school day, and now they are greeted not just with community, but with snacks that help them reset, refocus, and feel cared for. We use these resources during our meetings, discussions, and activities, and it has made a huge difference in student engagement. Something as simple as having a snack in hand has helped students feel more comfortable opening up, participating, and being present.\r\nOne moment that really stood out was during a recent BGU circle where students were sharing their thoughts and experiences. Normally, it can take time for students to feel ready to speak, but this time the energy was different. Students were relaxed, laughing, and fully engaged in conversation. It created a space where they felt safe, supported, and connected to one another. The snacks may seem small, but they helped create an environment where students could truly show up as themselves.\r\nWhen students first saw the snacks, their reactions were full of excitement and gratitude. There were lots of smiles, laughter, and even moments of surprise that something like this was just for them. It immediately made them feel seen and valued. More importantly, it showed them that their needs matter—not just academically, but as whole people.\r\nLooking ahead, we are continuing to build on this strong sense of community. Students are taking on more leadership roles, planning activities, and supporting each other in both academic and personal growth. As we move forward, BGU will continue to be a space where students can build confidence, develop their voices, and feel empowered. Students are actively earning points through participation, completing their work, showing growth, and supporting one another. They use these points to shop in our classroom store, which has turned everyday expectations into something they genuinely look forward to. I've seen students who used to hesitate to participate now raising their hands, staying on task, and putting in more effort because they feel recognized and motivated.\r\nOne moment that really stood out was during a recent lesson where students were working on CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) responses. Normally, this can be a challenging task for some students, but this time I saw a huge shift. Students were asking for feedback, revising their work, and encouraging each other because they knew their effort mattered and would be rewarded. It created a classroom environment where growth and effort were being celebrated in real time.\r\nWhen students first saw the store stocked and ready, their reactions were everything—excitement, curiosity, and a lot of \"Wait, we can actually earn this?!\" It immediately built buy-in and made them feel like their hard work would be seen and valued. More importantly, it helped build a positive classroom culture where students feel proud of themselves.\r\nLooking ahead, we're continuing to build on this momentum. Students are setting personal goals, tracking their progress, and becoming more independent in their learning. As we move into more complex lessons and projects, like science investigations and writing tasks, I'm excited to see how this system continues to motivate them to push themselves even further. One of the most exciting moments was when students used it to store agar plates for a bacteria growth lab. After swabbing different surfaces around the classroom, they carefully labeled and placed their samples in the fridge. Over the next few days, they eagerly checked for growth, making observations and asking thoughtful questions about where bacteria thrive and why. This hands-on experience made abstract concepts feel real, and students were genuinely engaged in the scientific process.\r\n\r\nWhen the refrigerator first arrived, students were immediately curious and excited -they kept asking, \"What are we going to use it for?\" Once they realized it meant more experiments and real lab materials, their enthusiasm grew even more. It gave them a sense that our classroom is a true science lab, not just a place to read about science. They've also used it to prepare for a density lab, storing ice ahead of time so they could explore how temperature affects mass and volume. These experiences have helped build both their confidence and their curiosity.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, students will continue using these materials as we deepen our investigations into human systems and scientific inquiry. They are beginning to design their own mini-experiments, using what they've learned about variables, observation, and data collection. The refrigerator allows us to sustain longer-term experiments and revisit them over multiple days, which is helping students think more like real scientists. The jellyfish lamp and kinetic balls continue to be student favorites—they get so excited to use them, and these calming tools help them regulate their emotions and refocus. We are especially thankful for the heating pad, which has made a meaningful difference for our girls during menstruation. Knowing there is always a heating pad and menstrual pads available has helped them feel supported and comfortable, and many no longer dread coming to school during that time of the month. With the addition of our Peace Corner posters, students now have clear, visual reminders of coping strategies, breathing techniques, and positive self-talk they can use independently. Our mini water fountain and jellyfish lamp have added gentle sensory elements—soft movement, soothing light, and calming sounds—that help students decompress during moments of stress or overwhelm. Even something as simple as having the proper USB cable has allowed us to consistently power and maintain these tools, ensuring the space is always ready when students need it. Together, these additions have created a more welcoming, peaceful environment where students feel safe, supported, and empowered to regulate their emotions and return to learning successfully. \r\n\r\nMy students reacted very happily to the materials. We've been using the new materials during our energy and forces unit, where students designed mini roller coasters to test kinetic and potential energy. Instead of just reading about it, they were able to build, test, redesign, and collect real data. One moment that stood out was when a student who usually struggles with written work became the \"lead engineer\" of their group, confidently explaining why adjusting the height changed the marble's speed. That kind of ownership doesn't happen without materials to experiment with.\r\nWhen the boxes first arrived, the reaction was pure excitement. Students kept asking, \"Is that for us?\" and immediately started brainstorming what we could build. There's something powerful about middle schoolers seeing that someone outside of our classroom believes in their learning enough to invest in it. It shifted the energy in the room — they felt valued.\r\nNext, we're moving into a design challenge connected to our natural hazards unit. Students will use the materials to create earthquake-resistant structures and test them on a shake platform. They'll collect data, revise their models, and write CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) explanations about why their designs worked or failed.
