I am confident that the impact of these aquaponics systems transcends curriculum. We set up one tank on the second floor outside of the restrooms where it would be highly visible to students who are waiting for partners or transitioning to classess. The second tank was set up in the library where every student would have the opportunity to visit at least weekly. \r\n\r\nHere are some of the testimonials from students and staff:\r\n\"As a teacher who daily pulls small groups of students out of multiple classrooms, I pass children interacting with the upstairs aquaponics system all day long. The stare into it, often relax, and imagine. I hear them inventing stories together about the complex lives of the fish inside. I have heard multiple students name each fish and assign its role in its aquaponics community. I see student who are normally very active pressing their faces against the glass in silence. These small moments of interaction with the natural world and each other give our students the opportunity to stop, take a breather, and reflect. Through the aquaponics systems, I get to witness what is most beautiful about our children: their sense of wonder. A sincere thank you to Mrs. Turner and the generous donors for providing us with this opportunity.\"\r\n\r\n\"It has been really fun having something new and exciting added to our hall. The aquaponics system is almost like our hallway pet! It's a great activity to keep us occupied during restroom breaks. I enjoy answering (or researching answers) to students' thoughtful questions.\"\r\n\r\n\"Our PAC students LOVE checking out the tank when we have library on Wednesdays. They look forward to \"new\" things that they notice. It's our first stop before we get started. \"\r\n\r\n\"I enjoy looking at the fish tank everyday 🐟😃💗. Without it, I would be really bored, when I am feeling gloomy or not in a good mood, the fish tank makes me stay calm and happy.\"\r\n\r\n\"I enjoy seeing the fish ,and it is so cool to see the baby fish. I learned that the fish tank has an ability to grow the plant on the fish tank. I have seen people not tapping on the glass, and I also learned a lot from the fish tanks, and I learned about the fish tank.\"\r\n\r\nStudents have enjoyed the recent addition of baby guppies that were born in the last two weeks. We have been able to incorporate lessons about ecosystems and lifecycles of both plants and animals. The entire school is incredibly grateful for the support and generosity of the donors.","fullyFundedDate":1767197441839,"projectUrl":"project/fresh-food-fish-farming/9831998/","projectTitle":"Fresh Food Fish Farming","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Turner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10275394_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758641019577","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10275394"},{"teacherId":10275394,"projectId":9750233,"letterContent":"My students were thrilled to have an opportunity to build solar robots. This particular science curriculum standard can seem very abstract to students without the opportunity for hands on learning. In my classroom, actually experiencing the transformations of types of energies was invaluable. The experience gave my students the opportunity to engage with vocabulary, collaborative conversations, and problem solving. \r\n\r\nThere was unmatched excitement that filled my classroom when I introduced the materials. Of course, students had lots of questions about the kits, and I introduced the concept of \"productive struggle.\" Students had to work with what they knew about following directions for building, like with a Lego set, and what they knew from their earlier unit of force and motion. There were many times when they wanted me to do things for them or give direct guidance while they were building. Instead, they were asked to question and challenge each other, and succeed in the end. \r\n\r\nThank you so very much for supporting their learning!","fullyFundedDate":1758843572534,"projectUrl":"project/sensational-science/9750233/","projectTitle":"Sensational Science","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Turner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10275394_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758641019577","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10275394"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_33771","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":500,"numTeachers":43,"percentFrplEligible":40,"percentAsian":22,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":29,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":35,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":5,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"11.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.8,"schoolId":33771,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Freedom Hill Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Freedom Hill Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/fairfax-county-public-schools/freedom-hill-elementary-school/33771"}
