The language journals and word sort teacher book give us structured, daily practice that helps students notice and organize sound patterns. Word family practice cards and Rainbow Phonics alien word cards provide focused, engaging practice with both real and nonsense words, which I use to assess and build blending skills reliably.\r\n\r\nA few specific wins so far:\r\n\r\nElkonin boxes and the textured-dot word cards make segmenting and isolating phonemes very tactile and explicit. Students select a word card, touch each dot while saying the sound, then read the whole word and match it to a picture—this step-by-step routine has helped many children internalize one-phoneme-at-a-time decoding.\r\n\r\nThe write & wipe word-mapping boards are especially useful. With sound-mapping on one side and syllable mapping on the other, the boxes and dots guide students to segment, arrows support blending, and the writing lines let them practice printing. \r\nThese boards make abstract phonics concepts concrete and give us quick formative evidence of progress.\r\n\r\nWord ladders are now a daily activity. Students pick a ladder, write the first word at the top, and flip through images to change one sound at a time as they work down the ladder. This routine boosts automaticity with phoneme substitutions and supports transfer to independent reading and writing.\r\n\r\nUsing nonsense words during assessment tasks continues to be invaluable for determining true phonics mastery, since it shows whether students can apply blending strategies to unfamiliar letter-sound combinations. \r\n\r\nWe could not be more grateful for these learning materials!","fullyFundedDate":1778061974407,"projectUrl":"project/readers-are-leaders/10137689/","projectTitle":"Readers Are Leaders","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Neumaier","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp974318_orig.jpg?crop=480,480,x0,y97&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1614741488692","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-neumaier"},{"teacherId":974318,"projectId":10151255,"letterContent":"These materials have made a real difference in both literacy and classroom culture.\r\n\r\nThe decodable and leveled readers (including the Spread Kindness series, Stick and Stone, and the Leveled Readers) have strengthened beginning readers' skills by reinforcing phonemic awareness, decoding, high-frequency vocabulary, and simple sentence structure. Because the texts use controlled vocabulary and predictable patterns, students build confidence as they practice fluency and comprehension. Our English Language Learners benefit especially from the clear context and supportive illustrations, which make meaning more accessible and speed vocabulary acquisition.\r\n\r\nEqually important, the books about kindness and empathy — paired with the Empathy workbook — support social‑emotional learning. The stories model prosocial behavior, perspective-taking, and respectful problem-solving, giving students language and examples to talk about feelings and make kinder choices in the classroom.\r\n\r\nTo keep these sets usable and portable, we store them on a small, mobile Apple Green book cart in our Book Nook.
