The items on this project will be used to guide students in finding acceptable ways of helping themselves work through frustration. The students learn to identify their frustration (If you can name it, you can tame it) then they are able to use these sensory items to work out their frustration in acceptable ways and not be a disruption. Some examples would be
* a student learns when I start to feel my hands make fists I know I am getting angry. I am not supposed to throw things or hit someone but I can go get the playdough and squeeze it until I feel back in control.
*a student realizes I am feeling frustrated and anxious and I know I am not supposed to run out of the room but I don't feel safe. I can go get the "smelly slime and and use it quietly at my desk until I feel better.
The students are taught expectations:
* everyone has feelings and they are not bad - we must control how we react to those feelings.
*we can use activities that make use of our senses to take control of our feelings.
These students are in my class because they are unable to function safely in the general education classroom. The idea of this classroom is to guide them in being able to recognize their frustration and to find ways to help themselves be safe as well as to socialize appropriately. These students need resources and guidance as to how to realize they are frustrated and find socially acceptable ways of dealing with those
