The Graveyard Book's murder mystery and eerie tone have sustained students through its highly demanding language and complex characterization. It consistently pushes their vocabulary and comprehension. Students are learning to track how mood, setting, and character choices develop across the novel rather than relying on quick summaries or surface-level interpretations from 2-3 page excerpts of novels, which is what the standard curriculum provides them. The text expects effort, and students are meeting that expectation.\r\n\r\nMexikid has resonated with many students for a different reason. They recognize their own lives — and their parents' experiences — in the story. Family dynamics, cultural expectations, and generational differences feel familiar, which has led students to make text-to-self connections that they can anchor in their own experiences. Students who are often disengaged during reading are finishing chapters, revisiting scenes, and explaining moments in the book through their own experiences. \r\n\r\nInstead of giving rote responses to short excerpts for a grade or to check them off, students follow characters and ideas across hundreds of pages and over weeks of reading, often because they want to. They are practicing remembering details, noticing gradual changes in characters, and sustaining focus beyond a brief reading window. Your support has provided these things for them.","fullyFundedDate":1761957298047,"projectUrl":"project/books-for-middle-schoolers-that-actually/9755927/","projectTitle":"Books for Middle Schoolers That Actually Work","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Nadal","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp621731_orig.jpg?crop=1694,1694,x478,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758690757749","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mr-nadal"},{"teacherId":9013840,"projectId":9785123,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our classroom through DonorsChoose. Your generosity has had an immediate and meaningful impact on my students, and I am truly grateful.\r\n\r\nThe watercolor paper was AWESOME for our animal portrait painting project. Students were very successful in creating bright, expressive animal portraits on the sturdy watercolor paper. I am so proud of their work!\r\n\r\nThe Hues & Cues game has been a fun addition to our classroom. It encourages students to think critically about color, vocabulary, and communication while collaborating and having fun. It has become a favorite brain break that still reinforces artistic thinking and color awareness.\r\n\r\nThis project also supported students beyond the art table. The soccer ball and football have been a great addition for to our outdoor breaks, helping students release energy, build cooperation skills, and return to class more focused and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, your support shows students that people believe in them and care about their learning experiences. These materials have helped create a classroom environment that is engaging, supportive, and joyful. Because of your generosity, our once windowless space has been transformed into a brighter, more welcoming environment where students feel inspired and cared for.\r\n\r\nThe plant grow lights have made an immediate and visible difference. With live plants thriving in our classroom, students now experience a sense of calm and connection to nature that was missing before. \r\n\r\nYour support also provided much-needed snacks for my students to help them stay focused and energized during class. I use the jolly ranchers as incentives and rewards for students who do a great job cleaning up or helping others.\r\n\r\nOur classroom library has grown into a powerful learning tool thanks to the variety of \"how to draw\" books you helped provide. Students now independently explore drawing animals, people, flowers, and fantasy characters during warm-up time or when they are done with their work. \r\n\r\nThe practical supplies have been just as impactful. Sheet protectors have been a fantastic solution for preserving the many handouts that I make for projects that remind students of the steps. Cleaning supplies help us maintain a clean and healthy space. Students clean their tables before they leave class, (and many students clean their table when they arrive, as middle schoolers aren't always the most thorough of cleaners.)\r\n\r\nBecause of you, our classroom is no longer just a room—it's a space filled with light, growth, encouragement, and creativity. Because of your support, my middle school students received left-handed scissors and see-through rulers—simple tools that have already made a meaningful difference in their learning.\r\n\r\nOur new rulers quickly became a classroom favorite. Students used them while learning about lines, line segments, rays, and points, and even created abstract line-based drawings to demonstrate their understanding. They've also been essential in our ratios unit for making tables and graphs, for neatly separating steps on their math assignments, and for setting up decimal operations so their work is clear and organized.\r\n\r\nThe scissors have been just as valuable. Students used them to cut out nets when exploring surface area, and to trim and glue important math reference materials into their notebooks. These tools help keep their interactive notebooks functional and personalized—something especially important for my 6th graders, many of whom are still developing strong organizational skills.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has not only provided us with the supplies themselves, but has also given my students the support they need to be neater, more accurate, and more confident mathematicians. Being able to clearly see their work and keep their materials organized has had a positive impact on their learning every single day.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in my students and for making our math classroom a brighter, better-equipped place to learn.","fullyFundedDate":1757788112831,"projectUrl":"project/essential-math-tools/9657875/","projectTitle":"Essential Math Tools","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Luckett","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5869759_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1536972701941","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5869759"},{"teacherId":9714932,"projectId":9650690,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation! The bungee folding chair has quickly become a favorite spot for students who need a moment to reset. The sand timer also gives them an easy, visual way to understand how much break time they have.\r\n\r\nThe electric pencil sharpener has been a daily blessing. It keeps our pencils sharp quickly and efficiently, and the students absolutely love using it. With limited outlets in my instruction area, the new power strip has also made a huge difference in helping me manage all the cords I rely on.\r\n\r\nDuring outside breaks, the students are always excited to use the new sports equipment. Soccer and football have been the most popular choices, and the volleyball, frisbee, and jump rope have been well-loved, too.
