Adding new titles to our classroom library has given students fresh choices and sparked renewed excitement around independent reading. These books introduce a wide range of skills—like identifying theme, analyzing character motivations, and citing text evidence—as students select books that match their interests and reading levels. Having more high-interest options available has helped students stretch their stamina, explore new genres, and practice the strategies we learn during mini-lessons.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading has become a more interactive and personalized experience. Some students read independently in cozy spaces around the room, while others chat with partners about their predictions or favorite moments. A few students who once hesitated to pick up a book now browse the shelves eagerly and proudly share what they're reading. The room often has a quiet hum of focused readers—some annotating with sticky notes, some recommending books to friends, and others getting so absorbed that they don't want independent reading time to end.\r\n\r\nThe new headphones have had an equally important impact, especially for students completing their i-Ready lessons. Our old headphones were too small and frequently broke, which made it frustrating for students to stay focused during their individualized learning time. These new, sturdy headphones fit comfortably, block out background noise, and allow students to stay on task without constant interruptions. One student who used to struggle to finish a single i-Ready lesson now completes several each week because he can finally hear clearly and work without distractions.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students access to tools and stories that support their growth and help make learning feel enjoyable. Your generosity has truly made a difference in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1755714660201,"projectUrl":"project/read-listen-learn-empowering-35-young/9601692/","projectTitle":"Read, Listen, Learn: Empowering 35 Young Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Mercer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3027156_orig.jpg?crop=273,273,x696,y327&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724025105595","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3027156"},{"teacherId":5868895,"projectId":9601427,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support in providing my fifth-grade students with a class set of What Was the Underground Railroad. Your donation has had such a meaningful impact on our classroom!\r\n\r\nMy students are using these books in dyad reading groups—pairs of readers working together to strengthen their speaking and listening skills while deepening their comprehension. This structure has created rich discussions as they explore the bravery, compassion, and determination shown by those involved in the Underground Railroad.\r\n\r\nReading this book has also beautifully connected to our Social Studies unit on American history. Students are gaining a deeper understanding of the struggle for freedom and equality, and many have shared personal reflections about fairness, courage, and doing what's right even when it's hard. Watching them make these connections—both academically and emotionally—has been powerful.\r\n\r\nBecause of your kindness, my students have access to meaningful literature that helps them grow as readers, thinkers, and empathetic young citizens.
