The new carpet and easel have made such a big difference in our classroom. When my students first saw the carpet, their faces lit up — they were so excited to have a cozy new space for our morning meetings and story time. It's been great for showing our thinking, drawing story maps, and modeling sentences. The books have helped the students with their book reports as they identify the characters, setting, problem and solution in each story. They were also able to predict what the story would be about. \r\n\r\nReading in the classrooms can take place in during their SOAR time, a time when students are working in a small group and/or reading a book of their choice and journaling about what they have read. \r\n\r\nParticular students that love the new books are DP and MM who love the humor in the books and the graphic nature of the stories. I am so grateful for your support and the impact you have made on my students. I installed them on the walls around the classroom and there is significantly less echo in the room. This is so important for the specifics of literacy learning and the general ambiance of the classroom.\r\n\r\nFor literacy learning, the reduced echo allows students to more clearly hear sounds when they are segmenting or blending phonemes (the individual units of sound in a language). We also do lots of partner discussion, so now students can hear each-other more clearly when all 12 partnerships are talking at the same time.\r\n\r\nFor general ambiance, having reduced echo in the room helps maintain calm. Some students are sensitive to sound-stimulation so less unnecessary noise is important.
