Students annotate passages, discuss their interpretations with classmates, defend their ideas with evidence from the text, and continually ask themselves, \"Why does this matter?\" Lord of the Flies is an especially powerful text for developing these habits because it raises questions that are both timeless and immediately relevant to teenagers: What makes us who we are? How much of our behavior is shaped by nature, and how much by our environment? What happens when rules and authority disappear? Why do people follow leaders? How does fear influence our decisions? What responsibilities do we have to one another?\r\n\r\nA class set of novels will allow every student to have the same text in their hands and to participate fully in these conversations. Instead of relying on summaries or sharing limited copies, students will be able to mark important passages, return to challenging sections, and develop their own interpretations. This physical interaction with the text is an important part of becoming a stronger, more independent reader.\r\n\r\nThe novel will also introduce and strengthen important skills that extend far beyond this one book. Students will practice close reading, identifying theme, analyzing characterization, examining symbolism, determining an author's purpose, making inferences, and selecting strong textual evidence to support analytical writing. They will learn to recognize how an author uses setting, conflict, point of view, and literary devices to communicate larger ideas. Most importantly, they will learn that literature does not have one \"correct\" interpretation; thoughtful readers can arrive at different conclusions as long as they can support their thinking with evidence.\r\n\r\nI am particularly excited about the students who sometimes struggle to see themselves as successful readers. Since the books focus on real estate, students are also learning vocabulary and ideas used in the real estate business. One important lesson they learned was the difference between flipping a property and investing for passive income. Students learned that flipping usually gives you a one-time profit, while investing can provide income over time. This helped students see how reading can connect to real-life money and investment decisions.\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, students read both independently and as a whole class. During independent reading, we listen to jazz music in the background to create a calm environment. Students use Post-it Notes to mark important ideas, questions, or topics they want to discuss. We place the notes on the whiteboard, and students talk with their classmates about the different topics from the book. To make sure students understand what they are reading, I give them both group quizzes and individual quizzes. These activities help students practice reading, working together, and explaining their ideas.\r\n\r\nThe book helped me bring my students together and become more involved in class discussions. Students enjoy sharing their thoughts and listening to different ideas from their classmates. The real-world topics make the reading more interesting and give students something meaningful to talk about. I have seen students become more comfortable speaking in class and working with others.
