Since the books focus on real estate, students are also learning vocabulary and ideas used in the real estate business. One important lesson they learned was the difference between flipping a property and investing for passive income. Students learned that flipping usually gives you a one-time profit, while investing can provide income over time. This helped students see how reading can connect to real-life money and investment decisions.\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, students read both independently and as a whole class. During independent reading, we listen to jazz music in the background to create a calm environment. Students use Post-it Notes to mark important ideas, questions, or topics they want to discuss. We place the notes on the whiteboard, and students talk with their classmates about the different topics from the book. To make sure students understand what they are reading, I give them both group quizzes and individual quizzes. These activities help students practice reading, working together, and explaining their ideas.\r\n\r\nThe book helped me bring my students together and become more involved in class discussions. Students enjoy sharing their thoughts and listening to different ideas from their classmates. The real-world topics make the reading more interesting and give students something meaningful to talk about. I have seen students become more comfortable speaking in class and working with others. Having classroom copies not only boosts equity by making it possible for all students to have a paper copy of the text, but also makes things run more smoothly for those times when someone forgets their copy at home. Obviously, they're great books--that's why I requested them!--but your contribution has also supported a \"no excuses, no disengaging\" ethos in the classroom that raises standards in a valuable way.\r\n\r\nPlus, as you can see in the pictures, the Folger Midsummer, besides its helpful introduction and scene synopses, and useful and concise footnotes, is also a good size to hold in one hand, which makes it all the easier to get students on their feet and reading Shakespeare out loud like it's supposed to be. Zoom in on the laughing, and you'll see the impact you had. Bonus points if you can tell what scene they're on.\r\n\r\nMeanwhile, previewing Woman Warrior opened students up to a text they might not have otherwise encountered--I was late to it myself. The walls are now covered with student work on display, students have materials for more hands-on projects. Lesson materials are better organized. And the book nook is an increasingly popular space in the room. \r\n\r\nIt truly is the little things that make a big difference, and that works both ways. Replacing the sight of dull wall paint with colorful student work both brightens the room and sends the message that student voices are valued. Moving old files so they don't crowd the fun closet both de-clutters the space and sends the message that students' emotional lives are valued.
