Your incredible generosity has brought a beautiful, diverse collection of new books into our 7th and 8th-grade classroom, and the impact has been immediate and profound.\r\n\r\nSince the boxes arrived, our daily reading time has completely transformed. It is an absolute joy to watch my middle schoolers rush to the classroom library every day, eager to grab these new titles. They are diving into these stories with an enthusiasm and focus that warms my heart.\r\n\r\nMiddle school is such a critical time for young adults to figure out who they are and how they fit into the larger world. Having a library filled with diverse characters, cultures, and voices has been an absolute game-changer for them. My students are finally seeing themselves reflected in the pages they read. Just as importantly, they are stepping into the shoes of people whose lives and experiences are completely different from their own. These stories have sparked amazing, empathetic discussions in our classroom that simply wouldn't have happened otherwise. They were afforded the chance to use their autonomy to use a book of choice that reflected their culture and reflect in a project on either theme, character, setting, tone, or all. It is one of our most successful projects to date.\r\n\r\nYou didn't just give us reading material; you gave these kids a broader view of the world, a safe place to explore complex identities, and a genuine love for reading.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in my students, for supporting public education, and for investing in their growth and empathy. These books create safe entry points for students to explore complex topics like identity, relationships, resilience, and coping strategies. Through stories and guided discussions, students are able to see themselves reflected in characters and situations, which helps normalize their experiences and emotions. SEL books also provide a shared language for discussing feelings and behaviors, making it easier for students to express themselves and engage in meaningful conversations with peers and adults.\r\n\r\nSensory fidget items are another important support that helps students regulate their emotions and maintain focus throughout the school day. Many students benefit from having a physical outlet to manage stress, anxiety, or excess energy, and fidgets provide a non-disruptive way to do this. When used intentionally, these tools can increase students' ability to stay engaged in lessons, participate in discussions, and manage challenging moments without becoming overwhelmed. They also empower students to take ownership of their own regulation strategies, which builds independence and self-awareness.\r\n\r\nTogether, SEL books and sensory fidgets create a supportive, responsive environment where students feel seen, understood, and equipped with tools to succeed. Having individual books has allowed students to truly take ownership of their reading. Instead of worrying about sharing materials, they can fully immerse themselves in Brian's journey and experience the story in a personal and meaningful way.\r\n\r\nThrough this novel, students are developing essential literacy skills such as analyzing character development, identifying theme, making inferences supported by text evidence, and expanding vocabulary through context. We also study the author's craft—how suspense is built and how vivid imagery brings the wilderness to life. Reading in our classroom is active and collaborative: students participate in thoughtful discussions, keep response journals, engage in literature circles, and sometimes sit in complete silence, fully absorbed in the story.\r\n\r\nThe survival theme has especially captured the interest of some of our reluctant readers. Students who were once hesitant to participate are now eagerly sharing predictions and insights. Rather than focusing on screens alone, we use tools that help students regulate their bodies, manage their environment, and stay engaged in learning. The wobble seats and colorful headphones we recently received are wonderful examples of how simple technology can have a powerful impact on student success.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most about these new tools is the comfort, choice, and fun they bring to learning. The wobble seats feel special and different from traditional chairs, which immediately increases student excitement and engagement. Students enjoy being able to move while they learn, and many proudly explain that the seats help them \"pay attention better\" or \"feel calmer.\" The colorful headphones are also a big hit. Students love choosing their headphones and using them during work time, which helps learning feel positive and motivating rather than restrictive.\r\n\r\nThese tools also support a more inclusive and equitable classroom environment. Every student learns differently, and not all students need the same supports. By offering wobble seats and headphones, we are honoring those differences and providing flexible options so all students can access learning in a way that works best for them. Students feel supported rather than singled out, which builds confidence and a sense of belonging.\r\n\r\nThanks to the generosity of our donors, our classroom has become a more engaging, supportive, and joyful place to learn. The wobble seats and headphones may seem like small additions, but they make a big difference.
