These little programmable robots are so much more than a collection of sensors and motors. To my students, they can be a gateway into the world of computer science. It is my hope that though using Ozobots, my students will have their first true experience with computer science change from being one of frustration and confusion to one of success and wonder. Students will first be introduced to the concept of coding though the color codes Ozobots has incorporated into their devices. This easy-to-comprehend system will help students realize that coding isn’t something reserved for the computer elite but, rather, a skill that everyone can be successful at. Engaging students with a new skill in a manner that is not only fun but fosters growth and accomplishments can light a spark that lasts a lifetime. Becoming familiar with the world of computer science at a young age can open countless doors in the future of our students. However, the best part about Ozobots is that they can adjust to varied student ability! Using the online block editor, students can learn the basic foundation concepts utilized in many of the computer programming languages used today. As students continue to grow, we can challenge them to learn about computer science in new ways which mirror real world computational thinking practices.
