We are using these graphic novels to bridge the gap between looking and reading. \r\n\r\nWhile many people think of graphic novels as \"just comic books,\" they are actually complex teaching tools. My students are currently learning inference and visual analysis. In a graphic novel, the author doesn't always tell you how a character feels the student has to read colors, the framing of the panel, and the character's body language to understand the subtext. It is a skill that prepares them for a world that communicates as much through images as it does through words.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, my classroom library has become the most popular corner of the room. During our independent reading time, you see students tucked into corners, completely immersed in stories that finally feel accessible to them. For the first time this year, I have students asking to check books out over the weekend rather than leaving them at school. \r\n\r\nI am especially seeing so much excitement with my English Language Learners (ELL) and my striving readers. Because the illustrations provide a safety net for the vocabulary, EL learners are not getting stuc k on words they do not know. Instead, they can follow along and participate in class discussions with confidence. Thank you so much for putting these high interest and engaging novels into the hands of our students.","fullyFundedDate":1767212225133,"projectUrl":"project/from-pictures-to-prose-graphic-novels-b/9748821/","projectTitle":"From Pictures to Prose: Graphic Novels Build Bridges to Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Christina Krasic","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3936538_orig.png?crop=398,398,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1642181420707","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/room225"},{"teacherId":3936538,"projectId":9904221,"letterContent":"The arrival of all the art supplies has completely transformed the energy in our classroom. The novels you funded were not only highly requested by my students, but they were exactly what they needed!\r\n\r\nThese new texts have opened the door to a range of essential reading skills. As we read, students are practicing close reading, character analysis, and evidence based discussion. Many of these books explore themes of identity, empathy, and resilience, which have allowed us to connect literature to students' own lived experiences. Because the stories are ones they truly wanted to read, they are engaging with them more deeply and thoughtfully than ever.
