My ESOL students were impacted because they often felt left out of the conversation. When traditional American holidays roll around, the school/ community takes great notice. In this case, Halloween would always trump Dia De Los Muertos because we have such a small number of Hispanic students in the school and community. This year, however, they learned that they can make their voices heard when they have the support and supplies to make this holiday significant.\r\n\r\nWe used the decorations all around our classroom, hallways, and library! We set up a picture booth so students could get a selfie taken with the decorations around them. Also, when the school had a trunk or treat a few days before Halloween, the students decorated my car with all of the skulls, streamers, and stickers, so our theme was obviously Dia De Los Muertos! My students felt seen and appreciated when people from the community came to our booth and learned more about the Hispanic culture.","fullyFundedDate":1760811998558,"projectUrl":"project/dia-de-los-muertos/9800965/","projectTitle":"Dia De Los Muertos","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. D. During our recent cell science investigations, students suited up with gloves, goggles, and proper lab materials to safely examine models, complete hands-on simulations, and design visual representations of plant and animal cells. Having reliable tools allowed them to focus fully on the science—asking deeper questions, collaborating with confidence, and taking pride in their work. During after-school tutoring, the healthy snacks have also made a meaningful difference by helping students stay energized and engaged while reviewing content and strengthening their understanding.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the new lab supplies and snacks, their excitement was immediate and heartfelt. Many shared that it made them feel like \"real scientists,\" and several expressed how proud they were to work in a classroom that looks and feels like a true laboratory. The PPE especially helped students feel safe and supported during experiments, while the snacks created a welcoming environment after school where students could relax, refocus, and push through challenging concepts together.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, our next steps include expanding our cell studies into student-created projects that combine science, creativity, and technology. Students will apply what they've learned by designing detailed models, presentations, and experiments that demonstrate cell structure and function. Because of your generosity, my students were able to experience learning in a truly meaningful, hands-on way that connected language, culture, art, and science.\r\nUsing the cardstock and paper circuit materials you provided, students designed and built Japanese greeting cards that literally lit up. They carefully wrote authentic Japanese phrases for loved ones—family members, friends, and teachers—making the project personal and heartfelt. Seeing their messages glow with LED lights gave students a strong sense of pride and accomplishment.\r\nWhen the materials were first introduced, the excitement in the room was immediate. Many students had never worked with paper circuits before, and they were eager to experiment. Students tested adding more than one LED light, discovering through trial and error how circuits function and why polarity matters. One of the most powerful learning moments came when students realized that LED lights only work in one direction—this discovery sparked curiosity, discussion, and deeper understanding of how circuits operate.\r\nJust as meaningful was the collaboration that naturally developed. Students who figured out the circuit quickly stepped up to help classmates who were struggling, explaining concepts, troubleshooting connections, and encouraging one another. This peer support built confidence, independence, and a strong sense of community in the classroom.\r\nThanks to your support, learning Japanese went far beyond vocabulary practice.
