We are urban high school students in Georgia. Most students are 3-4 years behind in their reading levels. The challenges of reading is often just as daunting as the challenges of how to get home safely or how to manage without the financial, emotional or academic support of a parent who values their education. Books are scarce, simply not a priority for those who have economic issues. I have heard great things from other high school teachers who have been able to get graphic novels to their students. My feeling is that the pictures will help maintain their attention and allow a distraction from their poor vocabulary. In addition it may offer context clues as to the plot or transition of the stories. The graphic novel offers a easy approach to what may be thought of as difficult text for my students. Thank You for your help with this project. Great news soon to follow.
