The third graders at my school love to learn the recorder and to earn belts through \"Recorder Karate\". I love that they are also each other's biggest supporters and will cheer each other on. Music is a universal language and students who may struggle in other areas often shine in our recorder class. It is essential that we have the tools we need to make sure the year runs smoothly. While these items may seem small at first glance they are extremely important to establishing and maintaining a working classroom. Third graders love to sharpen pencils and this can become out of hand but with their personal sharpeners they quickly learn that they do not need to exchange pencils with every line they write and they learn to manage their work time by using their own sharpeners at their seats. Likewise, the pencil boxes will replace those that have been broken and will help students maintain their essential supplies so that they are ready to go throughout the day. The fine tip Crayola markers are great for annotating, proving a point, and of course, creating art. Students have to learn how to annotate material in order to dissect a text and look for meaning, identify vocabulary and context clues, as well as find key features/points to support the main idea. Using colored highlighters helps students visualize what makes each of these text features important and how to differentiate between the key points and the main idea. Using wax highlighters rather than traditional highlighters allows students to read and annotate a text without the ink bleeding through the pages so they can annotate and still read what is on the following pages. Your generous contributions made this amazing lesson possible. This week we finished our state testing and we celebrated by dissecting owl pellets. First, we watched a short video about what owl pellets are and that we could determine what our owl has been eating. They were so excited to begin. A few were leary about touching them at first, but shortly became totally engaged and excited once they found bones and begin matching them to their identification charts. In the end, they wrote a short paragraph about what they thought their owl ate with supporting evidence from the bones they found. All of my students wanted to bag up the remains and take them home to share with their families. Thank you again for donating to our project. On Monday each student will disclose who their \"kindness\" buddy was and present poetry and pictures they made for them.
