This year my students have started using AVID strategies to help them become college and career ready. One strategy that we have been using throughout the school year is Socratic Seminar. In Socratic Seminar, students come up with their own leveled questions, drive discussion, and work together to better understand the books we are reading. Throughout this school year my students have impressed me so much with their thoughtful questions and responses. We have learned about California history using novels and Socratic Seminar. We do not, however, have a great novel to talk and learn about the Gold Rush. Reading and discussing the novel By the Great Horn Spoon will give these 4th graders a better understanding of what it was like to come to California during the Gold Rush.
