With this funding, my indigenous students now have opportunities to create qaspeqs by using the sewing machines. With the felt, our class creates air-dried salmon to learn the importance of subsistence and relying on the land and resources available. These children are ever so grateful for the chance to create using their own hands. Having these items helps the indigenous students identify with their culture and gives them a stronger voice to be resilient to outside factors. My students were super excited when they came into the classroom and saw the sewing machines.
