Most of my students have never heard of Shakespeare but they are somewhat familiar with his work being modernized. We had a LOT of spirited conversations about the characters, their motivations and the intention of the story that reading the original text would have hindered. One of their favorite assignments to do is the mind mirror assignment where they put all of their ideas about a character onto the chart paper inside an outline of a character's head. \r\n\r\nFinally, the new art supplies and the ability to lamitate student work has allowed them to see the value of putting in the time and effort into everything they do! The futon/couch has been a huge incentive for students. They ask permission to use the couch and have to demonstrate literary readiness to stay there (awake, following along in the text, pausing to take annotations). The competitiveness over the couch has also encourage students to come early to class to be the first to get permission. The fidget/wiggle stools have been used on a case-by-case basis to help students stay in the room during a shared reading and focus while still moving their bodies.
