Through these texts, students are building critical reading skills like identifying theme, analyzing character development, and making connections across texts and to their own lives. For example, in one recent lesson, a novel sparked a thoughtful debate about fairness and justice, helping students explore not just literary elements but also ethical reasoning and empathy.\r\n\r\nWhat does reading look like in your classroom?\r\nReading in our classroom is lively, collaborative, and full of discovery. Students read both independently and in groups, often annotating texts, discussing in circles, or responding through creative projects and writing. We encourage active engagement—students ask questions, make predictions, and connect personally to what they're reading. The room often buzzes with the sound of students debating character choices or excitedly sharing a line they loved.\r\n\r\nAre there particular students who are especially enjoying the new books, and how so?\r\nAbsolutely. One student who previously struggled to engage with reading found herself captivated by a new graphic novel in our collection. She now volunteers to read aloud and even asks for additional titles by the same author. Another student, who's a quieter presence in class, opened up through journal responses to a memoir we read, sharing insightful reflections that showed a deep connection to the story. These books are helping students see themselves—and others—in powerful new ways.","fullyFundedDate":1737651704486,"projectUrl":"project/black-history-month-lets-read-black-bo/9075657/","projectTitle":"Black History Month: Let's read Black Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Riley","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9268444_orig.jpg?crop=1250,1250,x0,y466&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1704688212686","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9268444"},{"teacherId":5983475,"projectId":8559447,"letterContent":"A heartfelt thanks for the generous contributions to my \"Sensory Break Room\" equipment project that was fully funded in September!\r\n \r\nAll of the items ordered are used on a daily basis by scholars that require a specialized space to \"take a break\" from the sensory overload that they frequently experience in a classroom.
