These new texts have helped us introduce and strengthen essential early literacy skills such as phonics, decoding, sight word recognition, and reading comprehension. Students are learning how to sound out unfamiliar words, recognize patterns in language, and build confidence as independent readers. The early chapter books, in particular, are helping students practice stamina—sticking with a story over multiple days—and understanding plot, characters, and sequencing.\r\nReading time in our classroom is one of the most joyful parts of the day. You'll see students gathered in small groups, taking turns reading aloud, helping each other with tricky words, and celebrating their progress. Others curl up in quiet corners, fully immersed in their books, eager to turn the next page. There's a growing sense of pride as students realize, \"I can do this!\"\r\nA few students who were once hesitant readers are now among the most enthusiastic. One student who used to avoid reading altogether now asks if they can take books home to practice. Another proudly shares stories they've read with the class, beaming with confidence. One favorite activity has been using the fine motor sets, tongs, and nuts-and-bolts construction toys to strengthen hand muscles that are essential for writing, cutting, and everyday classroom tasks. The slant board and triangular pencils have also made a big difference during handwriting practice, helping students position their wrists correctly and develop more functional pencil grasps. The Find the Letter Activity Center has been especially helpful during literacy-based therapy activities. Students practice locating and matching letters while also working on visual scanning, attention, and fine motor coordination. The calming maze boards and kinetic sand have also become valuable tools for sensory breaks and regulation. Many students benefit from short sensory or mindfulness breaks during therapy sessions. Tracing the breathing paths on the maze boards and engaging with the kinetic sand helps students regulate their bodies, improve focus, and return to tasks feeling calm and ready to work.\r\n\r\nThe microwave and paper plates have also helped us incorporate simple cooking and snack activities into our day, giving students opportunities to practice life skills like following directions, sharing, and cleaning up. These experiences make learning feel real and meaningful.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, students will continue using these materials during therapy activities designed to strengthen fine motor skills, visual-motor integration, and problem solving. We are using these resources to help students practice teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills in a fun and supportive environment. During small group time, students work together to build LEGO creations or play board games that require them to take turns, follow rules, and cooperate with their teammates. These moments give us great opportunities to coach students on important social skills such as encouraging one another, sharing ideas, and working through challenges as a team.\r\n When the students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate. Many students were smiling, cheering, and eagerly asking when they could start playing. Several even said \"thank you\" right away and couldn't wait to explore the games and start building with the LEGOs. It was wonderful to see how grateful and enthusiastic they were. The materials instantly created a positive energy in the classroom and gave students something to look forward to during group activities.\r\n As we move forward, we will continue using these games and building activities to strengthen social skills, especially learning how to win and lose respectfully. Students are practicing how to congratulate others, stay positive when a game doesn't go their way, and keep trying. These experiences are helping them grow not just academically, but also emotionally as they learn how to work together and support one another. The new sensory-based therapy materials are being used daily to support communication, engagement, and social interaction during speech therapy sessions. These resources allow my students to explore language through play while also benefiting from the calming and regulating effects of sensory input.\r\n\r\nOne particularly special moment occurred during a small group session when we used the new sensory materials to work on requesting and descriptive language. A student who is typically hesitant to communicate became excited while exploring the textures and immediately began using targeted words and short phrases to describe what they were feeling and seeing. The hands-on nature of the materials encouraged turn-taking, commenting, and asking questions among the group. What might normally feel like \"work\" during therapy instead became an engaging, play-based experience where communication happened naturally.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their faces lit up with curiosity and excitement. Many of them were eager to touch, explore, and interact with the new tools. The colorful, interactive items instantly captured their attention and created a welcoming environment where students felt comfortable participating. For several students who struggle with attention or sensory regulation, the materials helped them stay focused and engaged for longer periods of time.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, these resources will continue to be integrated into upcoming therapy activities focused on expanding vocabulary, building sentence structure, and strengthening social communication skills. We are beginning new lessons centered on describing, sequencing, and cooperative play, and these sensory materials will play an important role in helping students practice those skills in a fun and meaningful way. By combining play with purposeful language practice, my students are gaining confidence as communicators and building skills they can carry into their classrooms and everyday interactions.\r\n\r\nI am incredibly grateful to the generous donors who made this project possible.
