I work with 24 lively, energetic, and eager to learn 5-year-olds. My students live in Lincoln Heights which is a neighborhood in East Los Angeles. The people in the community I serve are hard-working individuals that want to ensure their children have better educational opportunities than they might have had.
Parents are very involved and supportive of their children's learning needs, however, they are limited in their resources and often times cannot support their child's English language development because they are non-English speakers and lack resources.
I serve a large population of immigrant families who are struggling to make a living. Our school is Title and offers free breakfast and lunch to all students.
The families in our community have been struggling financially and, now more than ever, will need support, resources, and community outreach.
My students are accustomed to learning through singing, dancing, playing, and fully engaging in our classroom's interactive activities. During this worldwide pandemic their lives have dramatically changed. They are no longer able to physically be in a school environment but rather are expected to continue learning at home.
The Apple iMac will allow me to continue engaging my students in learning through interactive means by using Zoom to conduct lessons and providing parents with tutorials on how to access the various educational websites and apps that are available for remote learning.
For example, I will be able to read to my students and allow them to ask and answer questions in real-time. I hope to be able to provide my students with a sense of normalcy during this time and allow them to interact with me and their peers.
