My students need a variety of books that are focused not only on accuracy and text complexity but interest and preferences, community, life events, goals, inquiry and habits.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are energetic 6 and 7 year olds that enjoy learning about the whole world around them. They love to explore new learnings and familiarize themselves with everything "STEAMY!" I work at a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) Academy. My school is wonderful and the environment really allows my students to be innovative thinkers and creators. Although our school is nice, we still service low income families. By providing my students with more books, they can continue to fulfill their goals of becoming great readers!
My Project
I’ve learned that when students have access to books they develop habits of lifelong learning and curiosity. These books will support what I need to teach my students in order for them to grow as readers and they will also help with having a better variety of books to choose from. As a teacher, I want to meet the range of learners in my class and these books will give me a start in doing so. Books are the heart of teaching literacy so I want to ensure our classroom library has what it needs for every student. Having these books will also allow our library to stay fresh with titles that they will want to read over and over again!
