The binders have transformed how students manage their work (assignments are no longer crumpled or lost), and students can quickly find what they need during lessons. One moment that truly stood out was during a reading and writing block: students independently pulled out the correct section of their binders, put on their headphones, and worked quietly with confidence. The structure these tools provide has helped create a calmer, more productive learning environment where students feel prepared and successful.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, my students were genuinely excited. Many of them had never owned a binder or personal headphones before, and seeing each child receive the same high-quality supplies made them feel valued and included. Several students immediately began organizing their papers with pride, and others shared how the headphones helped them concentrate better during independent reading and online learning activities. Their enthusiasm reminded me how powerful it is to remove barriers so students can focus fully on learning.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, my students are now better equipped as we continue working on reading comprehension, writing projects, and independent learning tasks that require focus and organization. These tools will continue to support them throughout the school year as they build responsibility, confidence, and strong learning habits. Thank you for giving my students the resources they need to stay engaged, organized, and ready to succeed. Putting books in readers' hands and giving them the opportunity to sit down and read is crucial in building confident readers. By rotating library books inside the classrooms, students can spend their extra time in a cozy corner, reading. This provides multiple opportunities throughout the day. In addition, students are exposed to multiple genres and subjects. Self-chosen texts are also an important component in encouraging a lifelong love of reading. \r\nOur teachers have been excited as they are handed their bags. They have the choice of a variety pack or a requested theme. Students earn the position of bringing the book bag to the library for book rotating. Students who finish an activity early have something quiet to do while the teacher focuses on the students still working. This has been a gift to the classroom in many ways. Some teachers have asked to have 2 book bags at a time!\r\nThank you from me, the librarian, for helping me provide a greater service to the campus. I have been able to provide academic extensions in the library to multiple grades this month. Second grade is studying insects. The models of and the live ants have worked as great ways for students to learn the body parts. Watching the ants build tunnels and carry their food has been a great hands-on learning tool. We have discussed the role insects have in our environment and food chains.\r\nOther grades were learning about living vs. nonliving. In addition to sand vs. ants, we have also discussed the living ants that died. We have learned about their life cycle, making connections to the butterflies we studied last year. We will extend this discussion next month as we move into a unit on marine animals. \r\nStudents have also turned into scientists, learning to use magnifying glasses, studying how the colony interacts, watching how the sunrise affects the location of ants within the colony, and more. A side lesson occurred when some of the seeds intended for food started to grow into plants!\r\nThank you for providing an invaluable learning opportunity!","fullyFundedDate":1758219281232,"projectUrl":"project/ant-engineering/9690717/","projectTitle":"Ant Engineering","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Owen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6971301_orig.jpg?crop=709,709,x546,y450&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1751050411739","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jljlibrary"},{"teacherId":10303471,"projectId":9797350,"letterContent":"The \"Lighting the Love for Reading\" project has transformed my classroom in meaningful and lasting ways. By adding soft, warm lighting and creating a cozy, welcoming reading environment, students now see our reading corner as a place they want to be, not just a place they go. The calmer lighting has helped reduce visual overstimulation and has made the space feel safe, peaceful, and inviting.\r\n\r\nSince implementing the project, I have observed increased motivation simply because the space feels special and comfortable. I've seen students engage with books more eagerly and spend more time reading independently. The new lamps and cozy atmosphere have also boosted students' ability to focus, self-regulate, and enjoy their literacy time. \r\n\r\nThe project has improved the overall climate of our classroom. Students often choose the reading area as a place to calm down, reflect, or work quietly. The parents were happy to see the books being recycled, showing a good use of their taxpayer dollars. \r\nThe second event was a comicon that drew 4,000 students from across the District and community. I was so busy, I never looked up for 3 hours. The students were so excited to sift through the old books for their favorites and to be able to represent them. Some of these were represented on panels and I was able to send them in the right direction.
