My Students

My fourth grade class in Utah is full of 26 students who are eager to be back in the classroom. Children are encouraged to become lifelong learners by providing child-centered instruction responsive to the unique interests and needs of each child. We empower children to be responsible for their own learning and encourage children to think independently to help them grow into self-directed, responsible adults.

In my class, I am passionate about helping the whole-child develop.

I build strong relationships with my fourth-grade students and their families to support the academic, social, emotional, and physical growth of each student. Flexible learning helps students make the most responsible choice for their learning in a developmentally appropriate way. Please help me give my students more flexibility with their learning!

My Project

Stress, anxiety, and the trauma of an ever-changing world during the pandemic are affecting students. If their minds are overstressed and anxious, they are not in a frame of mind to learn. To help support my young friends, I want to create a safe, calming Zen space for them to practice mindfulness and calm their bodies and minds so they can recharge and really focus on learning.

The Zen Zone will allow students who are having strong emotions to take a break, practice mindful breathing exercises, and utilize calm down strategies to help them deal with their emotions.

This area will provide a safe and welcoming environment for them to regroup.

When entering the Zen Zone, students will practice a deep breathing exercise of their choice. Then they may choose a calm down activity for 5 minutes using a sand timer. Calm down activities include a comfy chair, fidget toys, yoga/meditation area, building blocks, coloring pages, and brain teaser puzzles.

These calming strategies and mindfulness exercises help students slow down and be more intentional. Proven benefits include focused attention, increased ability to regulate emotions, and demonstrate executive functioning skills.

Each student will receive their own self-care kit to use. Learning these strategies now will better equip them to handle and persevere through life challenges in their future.
