My Students

"You Dirty Rat" is an old saying that many people still use today. However, I plan to teach my students the reasoning behind the saying and give them a new prospective on an old, universal belief.

My third grade students are curious about nature...the good, the bad, and the ugly.

They have a thirst for scientific knowledge, absorbing and retaining any and all interesting facts. Our school is similar to many public schools in Nevada. We, too, have come upon hard times and budget cuts.

My Project

The resources provided will be used to complete a fiction/non-fiction comparison unit on rats, often misunderstood creatures. First, my students will read the whimsical story, Hooway for Wodney Wat, completely several fun-filled reading activities. Second, using the resource materials requested, they will conduct research, cite sources to support their findings, and complete the writing process, writing a research paper about rats.

This project will allow my students to read a wonderful picture book, complete research and site references, and write a research paper about curious creatures, rats.

And, hopefully, "You Dirty Rat" will have a whole new meaning for them!
