Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have been lucky enough to be the full-time General/Vocal Music Specialist in my elementary school for 16 years. My school is located in the heart of an urban school district where many of my students have challenges outside of the school building. Being a Music Specialist means that I get to teach 24 classes of students each week, approximately 450 students. Our school is a magnet school which focuses on Science and Technology. I am constantly looking for exciting, creative and fun ways to engage my students in the learning process.

While my students all look forward to, and are excited to participate in music class, we don't always have as many materials as we need. Unfortunately, my budget for each school year is quite small and we can only afford to order what is absolutely necessary. I would love to acquire some more classroom instruments to use with my students so more of them can be participating at the same time.

I am looking to do some more percussion work with my students and am asking for your help to get three new drums for our music classroom. One of the drums is a Gathering Drum which more than one student can use at the same time. The other two drums are Djembe drums which are designed more for individual use. I'm looking to perform some drum circle activities and other creative learning experiences with all of my students, kindergarten through fifth grade.

With your donation, my students will be able to have more "hands-on" time with instruments, which will enrich their musical experience. I am trying to instill a love of music while they are young so they will develop a life-long appreciation of music.
