Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each morning our students arrive at school, ready for a long day. They are required to leave the security of home and family and face the world.

The stakes are high, and their parents and teachers want the world for them.

Who are these students? They are citizens living in one of America's poorest and most dangerous cities. For many of them, school is the safe haven.

The classroom they enter has starfish and seahorses, rocks and magnets, wasps nests and ostrich eggs. They love to share with me and their peers the new discoveries these materials are bringing to them.

Many of them do not have technology available to them at home. School brings the world to their doorstep.

My Project

When I was a young girl, the city library opened the world to me. Unfortunately, not only has the local city library been closed down, our school library was closed two years ago. Statistics show that the children of lower income families are read to significantly less than the children of upper-income families. Most of my families do not have the availability of books in their homes. For this reason, we provide an opportunity for the children to participate in a lending library program. The children love it. We are in need of new books such as the Traditional Stories in Spanish Book Set (Set of 6)

Engaging parents or drawing them into the academic goals for their children produces results.

I want to be able to send home lending library books that make it easy for parents to read to their children. I want to provide for the parents a selection of quality literature that will enable them to join me in teaching them the literacy skills necessary for success in school. I see my students retelling the stories, engaging in conversations about characters and settings. I see my students excited about the new book they are taking home for the night. Family involvement and developing a love of reading pays dividends for years to come.
