My students consist of a diverse population of primarily low socioeconomic, ELL students, students whose second language is English. There are many stressors affecting their academic performance on a daily basis.
Our students face the stresses of being immigrant students in a country where they know not the native language, standardized testing, home life stressors, and more.
These students desperately need help in acquiring tools to help them destress so they can be more academically sound and ready to learn on a daily basis.
One of our school district’s initiative is to help students with mental health. I am aiming to help students learn how to take mindful breaks in their moments of stress, anger, sadness, and hyperactivity as our school’s Physical Education teacher.
We have roughly about 600 students, Kindergarten through fifth grade, with a small ASD student population, all who face major challenges and stressors.
I have no more than 30 students in a class at a time. My students face stressors via testing, being immigrants in a new country, and other medical/health stressors. Learning how to destress is essential to their learning.
