Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The school I work in is a specialized district complex that serves students with special education needs coupled with high behaviors. Most of our students have autism, although we do have students that have other disabilities. Our student population is small due to the nature of our work. We are constantly working on building and developing important life skills for our students.

Our students have the ability to show their true skills and abilities with the proper supports and encouragement in place.

Our main approach with our students is to teach important life skills, while still exposing them to appropriate level academics. To do this, we rely on some technology but mainly manipulatives and books that our students can easily work with using their fine motor skills. This also requires us to get very creative and spend a lot of time prepping materials for our students.

Each of our students has amazing possibilities in front of them. My goal is to provide each student every opportunity I can so that they can live a fulfilling life as independently as possible.

My Project

Throughout the day, my students depend on the ability to take breaks and get away from their distractions in the classroom. My students also enjoy taking time to stretch and get into yoga poses. This project would allow me to give my students yoga mats that they can use during our daily yoga sessions. During times of needing to calm down, my students demonstrate the need for extra pressure and the weighted blankets in the project will allow them to get the extra pressure they need. We also utilize essential oils in our classroom to help our students to remain focused and clam.

Taking time to be mindful, calm, and relaxed is extremely useful and beneficial to my students.

The materials in this project will allow me to offer my students multiple options for minimizing behaviors and to assist my students with achieving mindfulness and self-regulation.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
