My Students

My students live in one of the most culturally and economically diverse areas in the world! They are full of potential, multicultural, and curious about how they fit into the world around them. In this project I will serve all students at grade levels 9-12 with social emotional learning (SEL) opportunities in addition to my 10th grade English students. Even though many students come from different areas of the world, they are welcoming and friendly to each other. I hope to create a yoga program that will help to bring the students even closer through shared experiences. Many students feel stress from home or in school, and I would like to give them tools to help manage the pressures they may encounter on their journey through high school and beyond through yoga and meditation.

Every student has a spark of determination that helps drive them towards their goals.

I would like to help them in their efforts by providing social emotional support so that students can succeed. Here is a quote from a student about the experience:

“When you feel relaxed, your mind feels relaxed, and it frees your mind to help you think more efficiently.” 12th Grader

My Project

As educators, we play multifaceted roles on top of teaching our academic content. Our students are facing typical teen stress along with the added pressures of the pandemic. The Breathe for Change social-emotional training program will play an important role in my quest to teach student mindfulness strategies that will benefit them in the present and give them vital skills for the future. Some of the social emotional learning skills will teach students self-control, mindfulness, and empathy among many others. Learning these skills will empower students to love, care, and advocate for themselves as well.

Breathe For Change is a program by educators for educators with the goal of spreading meditation, philosophy, anatomy, social-emotional learning and strategies, improving mental health and self-care, and yoga practice among schools.

This project will help me build on what I know about these strategies and tools and will help me share the positive change I’ve experienced with future students, as well as the faculty in my building and my district as a whole.
