Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are curious and enthusiastic learners. They are natural scientists who love conducting hands-on experiments. They attend a Title I school and live in a low-income neighborhood in our city. Despite these challenges, my students are eager to learn when provided with the opportunity and resources. Our school offers a safe space for them to grow and flourish. We have an exceptionally strong social support system, with counselors working with small groups of students on an ongoing basis from grades six to twelve. This is to ensure they graduate from high school and enroll in college.

My goal is to create an exciting, positive, learning environment for my students to explore the world around them.

Most of my students come from homes where academic enrichment opportunities outside of school are limited. They truly appreciate any of the extras we can bring into the classroom.

My Project

I want to share a little bit of my culture with my students with these Red Lucky Money Envelopes, Lunar New Year Chocolate Coins and candy. Even though New York City is known for its diversity, most of my students have not ventured far beyond their neighborhood boundaries.

I would like to give them some direct exposure to Asian culture this Lunar New Year.

A red envelope is a gift of money inserted into an ornate red pocket of paper. They are given on some important occasions, such as Lunar New Year, birthdays, and weddings in many Asian countries as a way to send good wishes.

The color red symbolizes energy, happiness, and good luck in Asian cultures. Traditional red envelopes are often decorated with beautiful Chinese calligraphy and symbols.

I considered putting dollar bills in these red envelopes, but the actual significance of red envelopes is the red paper, not the money inside. Wrapping lucky money in red envelopes is expected to bestow more happiness and blessings on the receivers. So I will instead fill these red envelopes with chocolate coins and good luck candy.
