WWII and the Holocaust through Literature

My Students

My students are diverse, but driven. Many of the students I teach are part of the English Learner Immersion program. Some come from war-torn countries. However, they are also students that take accelerated classes as well as belong to the AVID program.

It is amazing to be surrounded by these diverse backgrounds and experiences where we have a community of learners (including myself!) that are driven to achieve more.

Learning about these hard-working and diverse students and helping them see that they can all be heroes in their own way has inspired me to be the best teacher that I can be for them.

My Project

My students are taking part in a cross-curricular study of WWII and the Holocaust with me, their English teacher, and with their World Studies teachers. Students will get to choose from these books and some others that I already have to read in literature circle groups of four.

This project is unique in that students will get to choose what books they read based on their interests and reading abilities to help grow their love of reading.

These books offer a wide variety of angles of study. Some of the books are nonfiction accounts from Holocaust survivors. Other books are historical fiction accounts of the Holocaust as well as other WWII events.

After the completion of the books, the students will be working in their literature circle groups as museum curators to create a museum exhibit that demonstrates their knowledge of WWII as well as what events from WWI, the rise of dictators, and the Russian Revolution contributed to the events of WWII. This project will be completed in both their English and World Studies classes.
