Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine loving to write, but not being able to do so? My students don't have the opportunity "publish" their writings in a personal class yearbook because of our lack of funds. Since we are given only $200 a year for all classroom supplies, there is no money for the extra supplies we need.
My classroom consists of 23 third grade students of which 17 are of minority decent.
They all live in a rural area with low social economic status. We are part of a kindergarten through third grade public school with approximately 500 students. Our school is currently designated by the state of California a PI-5 (Program Improvement-fifth year). This means that we have not met our achievement goals in Language Arts for many years, therefore, our students need your help!
My Project
I am requesting a multi-purpose color photo printer and supplies to use to enhance my students' writing opportunities. This copier will motivate my students to write captions for the photos taken throughout the school year. The plan is to ultimately publish a classroom yearbook captivating our entire year's activities including field trips, community and school activities, spirit days, feasts, and celebrations, etc.
My students will learn to write creatively and expressively taking their writing to another level. We will be editing captions to give real meaning and "voice" to our photos.
Can you imagine being excited to write about something, but never getting the chance to do so?
I want to excite my students about writing. Since kids always want to talk about their experiences, why not use that knowledge, and challenge them to do so with guided writing lessons? I want to do this because many studies have shown that "writing" actually helps students perform better in reading. This project will have many benefits for my students. It's only one way I can help them. Please help me.
