Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At the beginning of each school year, I explain to my students that just like I get paid to do my job every day, they will also get "paid" to do their "jobs." Similarly, if I did not perform my job adequately and did not meet expectations, there would be consequences. In my classroom, students earn class money as a reward for positive expected behaviors. Each time students enter my class, they can earn up to $1.00 of class money. When they fail to meet expectations, they lose some of their "paychecks." This system holds students accountable for their actions, such as helping others and being on task, so that all students feel safe in the learning environment and that instruction is not interrupted by unwanted behaviors and distractions.

Although we want students to always do the right thing, fourth graders, who have not yet fully developed intrinsic motivation to always work hard and do what is right, often need some extrinsic motivation to help them stay on track.

As a result, in order to create buy-in, students are able to cash in the class money they have earned for prizes. Students have requested prizes, such as legos and fidgets, that they would like to work for. With this project, we will make sure that we always have high-interest prizes available for students to earn.
