My Project

A large percentage of my students have been through trauma, or experience mental health disorders such as anxiety or depression. As we know, mental health is just as important as physical health. Not only does mental health affect physical health, but untreated mental health problems interfere with learning, socialization, self-esteem, and other important aspects of child development that can have lifelong repercussions. Untreated mental health problems may also lead to suicide.

As a school counselor, one of my main goals is to help address my students’ mental health concerns, provide them with a supportive/safe space, and teach them healthy coping mechanisms.

In the guidance office, there is a large space with some tables and chairs in it. I would like to transform this space into the “Woosah Calm Space” so that I can provide students with a safe, supportive space where they can come to take a break or talk to a counselor about their concerns. This calm space would be inviting, inclusive, and free from bullying or discrimination. It would include a variety of supplies and items that would help students learn healthy coping techniques as well as how to relax and destress.

I would like to purchase a variety of art supplies so that my students can learn creative art therapy techniques, with the ultimate goal of becoming calm. Art can be a fantastic coping mechanism!
