Because of your generosity, our afterschool club now has consistent access to snacks that help sustain students through long days of rigorous academic work followed by extended learning after school. Many of our students come directly from full school days into research meetings, and having food available allows them to stay focused, energized, and fully engaged rather than distracted by hunger.\r\n\r\nWhat has been most exciting for students is the simple but powerful message your support sends: they matter. Students are genuinely appreciative when they arrive after school and see snacks available for them. It creates a welcoming environment where they feel cared for and supported, which has strengthened attendance, participation, and collaboration during club meetings. Snacks have become a shared resource that encourages students to stay, contribute ideas, and work through challenging research discussions together.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who previously struggled to remain engaged late in the day have especially benefited. With their basic needs met, they are more confident asking questions, participating in group work, and pushing themselves academically. Your generosity has helped remove a small but significant barrier to learning, and in doing so, you've helped fuel the curiosity and determination of future scientists and medical professionals. Having this winter gear has removed a daily stressor for many of them, allowing them to enter the building warm, comfortable, and ready to focus. I've already noticed a difference in how students settle into their first classes of the day, especially during early morning periods when the cold used to linger long after arrival.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first received the hats and gloves, their reactions said it all, smiles, gratitude, and a few quiet \"thank you's\" that truly meant everything. Several students immediately put them on and shared how much they appreciated having something new that was just for them. For many, it was a reminder that people beyond their school care about their well-being and believe in their success. That feeling of being supported has had a powerful impact on their confidence and sense of belonging.\r\n\r\nAs high-performing STEM scholars, my students are currently immersed in rigorous coursework, research projects, and career exploration activities tied to science, engineering, and medicine. Students are already brainstorming designs for awareness campaigns around topics like mental health, nutrition, and preventive care. They plan to create and distribute their buttons during student-led service events, and partnership visits with local hospitals and universities. Each button will serve as both a symbol of their career aspirations and a tool to engage peers in meaningful health conversations.\r\n\r\nAlthough we're just getting started, the students are full of ideas and motivation. Our students really love manga and graphic novels! They have told me that these types of books--books that include many images along with words, similar to comics--are a relaxing change of pace from the more rigorous reading that they do in for classwork.\r\n\r\nIn our library, students choose the books that they are most interested in. So many young people do not read for pleasure these days, so having a large collection of books that they want to read is important! These manga and graphic novel books have expanded our collection or filled in missing spaces where books have been lost due to not being returned. Students don't want to start a series at book #2 or #3, and missing a book in a long series (some have 40+ books in them!) can mean they stop reading. Your donation allows more students to find joy in reading.\r\n\r\nI had students come in while I was unpacking the shipment, and they were adamant that they needed to check out these books. Since they weren't in the system yet, I told them they would have to wait. However, I did show them our current manga and graphic novel collection, and they all checked something out; two were helping a third try something new, and these conversations around reading are part of what make a library so magical.
