This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are young performers from the Coachella Valley in California. We have a 6th-8th grade band and color guard program that is comprised of close to 200 students.

Our students enthusiastically come to class each day, and often describe the band and color guard as one of the most safe and welcoming groups that they are a part of.

Something that makes our program very special is that teamwork, and leadership opportunities happen very regularly due to the structure of our program. Our students are highly motivated to help each other out with their music, instruments, and choreography. Each student wants to see every individual succeed which in turn helps the whole program succeed. Every day they motivate me to continue to be a better person and teacher.

My Project

Most of my students and their families struggle to be able to purchase expensive supplies that are needed for students to make good sounds on their band instruments. As these students are mostly beginners, it is crucial that they have working reeds in order to play their woodwind instruments (clarinet, saxophone, etc.), otherwise, they are going to quickly feel defeated if they do not have the resources to continue to be in band.

The goal here is to make music education as equitable as possible, and to prevent students who come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds to feel that they need to play a "cheaper" instrument in order to participate in band.

We want to give all students the opportunity to have a quality music education with quality resources.
