I have seen the turn in rate go up just by simply setting us this organization skill. I started a lego club for the very reason to get student's interested in architecture, to practice problem solving, and to make a difference in how they are presented stem opportunities. I have a lot of students who find themselves below grade level and this is a nice way to show them visually what is happening. \r\n\r\nI like to see what topic we are working on and find ways to scaffold in a small lesson using the manipulatives. I have had a lot of students who are not familiar with newer calculators and it is intimidating for them. With these calculators we use them to check our work and make sure that what we are writing down is accurate. \r\nStudents get excited because they are used to having to do everything by hand but as they transition to a higher grade we let them know that technology is good in moderation. This year I have a lot of students who are not sure about graphing since they can't visualize what is happening on the graph and when they see it on the LFD they can't wrap their mind around what is happening to the points. By letting them use these xy coordinate peg boards I have seen students get excited because they didn't know something like this exists and it helps them get started on the problems faster. \r\n\r\nCurrently they are learning how to reflect, translate, and rotate points so this a great visual way for them to really build up their understanding. It is giving them real-life skills, and then they can go back and use area tiles to see what is the area of their chosen object before we move to taking notes. We plan to do a name project using area and perimeter, where students can get creative but apply what they currently know.
