My students are middle school students and are all Title 1. This means that their funds are limited on having hands-on materials to learn engineering and how what they are learning can be used to help them and their families stay healthy. COVID and preventing the transmission of the virus is what the students will try to prevent. They will start with a cardboard base. From there they will construct a box with 4 sides using the filters. The arrows will be pointing inward as the air from the room will be drawn into the sides. On top, we will mount the fan so that when it is turn on, it will blow in an upwards direction. All sides will be sealed with duct tape and decorated using colored foil or paper. The fan will draw the air through the filters and blow the cleaned air upwards back into the room. The MERV 11 or 13 filters will scrub up to 90% of all particles that carry the COVID virus from the air hence cleaning a room in which the families are. Most systems on the market today cost well over $800.00, but we can build one for less than $100.00 that does just as good. Middle school is a hard age and finding hands-on activities that not only give the kids an application to what they are learning, but they can see how it can help anyone and everyone in real life. The math involved will be measuring the particles in the room, checking the level of particles entering the filters, and checking the levels again after the air leaves the fan. They then can find percents of change, use scientific notation to express their findings, graph the results, and repeat in multiple locations.
