Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“Show me your GREATNESS!” are the words that resound in my class of first graders. Students work hard every day to show their greatness through their interactions with peers and adults, and with a curriculum that challenges them in every area.
I strive to help my students develop their GREATNESS and to develop the mindset that they CAN achieve any goal they set for themselves.
We are a Title 1 neighborhood school. Our school population of 450+ students has an ELL population of 25% which includes several newcomers to our country, along with a free and reduced lunch population of 65%. Our goal is to make a difference one child at a time. With the diversity of backgrounds, including students whose lives have been impacted by trauma, and the variety of language learners, my goal is to engage them in learning throughout the whole day.
My Project
First grade is an amazing year for developing emotional and academic growth. They learn reading, writing and math skills, along with becoming more familiar with their world through science and social studies. I want to have resources that will help every child to learn, whether the child is a newcomer with no English, a student with limited language, a proficient English speaker, or one with emotional and behavioral concerns.
Students show their GREATNESS while exploring, collaborating, working, learning, caring and MOVING.
By building trusting relationships and nurturing each child’s greatness, my first graders will achieve emotional and academic success. At our school, the P.R.I.D.E. code is the guide for students. P.R.I.D.E. stands for Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Diversity and Excellence. These character traits become embedded in our students as they learn in whole and small groups, as well as working independently. I want my classroom to provide more opportunities for students to interact with each other, to show caring, kindness, and understanding through movement incorporated into their daily routine.
The Kore Wobble stools and Deluxe Desk Exerciser will allow movement while learning. Students with behavior concerns due to trauma are more successful when movement is incorporated into their day. The Sit Spots will designate easily-changed spots for sitting during whole group. These seating options will help students to stay on task and focus on their learning. This is especially important when working all young students. These seating options are another way to help them develop the mindset that allows them to show their GREATNESS.
