My students need several Girl's and Boy's 3 Piece Knit Hat, Scarf & Gloves Sets, Loritta 5 Pairs Winter Warm Thick Knit Wool Crew Socks, Boys Winter Warm Socks 5 pack and deodorant.
My students are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and come from many different backgrounds. They use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate. Most students have very low language and academic skills when they first come to me due to lack of access to language in earlier years. This creates a long road ahead of us as we work to minimize those large gaps.
My students attend an urban school where one hundred percent of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
The students come from many different backgrounds and face many different challenges in their day-to-day lives. There are many single income families, families that are homeless and families that are receiving assistance in one form or another.
This year, I have seven students: three second graders, three fourth graders and one in fifth grade. Most of my students' language and communication skills are very low. My challenge is to teach them their language, ASL, and academics at the same time. It is a tough challenge, and my students give me their best effort every day.
My Project
It is never too early to think about the winter months here in Michigan.
My students too often come to school without the appropriate winter necessities.
I have requested a class set of winter hats, scarves and gloves so we are still able to go out for recess and so my students are warm to and from school in the winter months.
I have also requested warm socks. I have noticed my students wearing no-show socks during the winter months and them complaining that their feet are cold and or wet from the snow. I am hoping this will help them feel the warmth they desire.
And to top it off I have asked for deodorant for my older students whose bodies are changing and developing.
Sometimes the families don't have the means to get some of the essentials for their kids and this project will help in that area.
