Wild and Wonderful Words

My students need thesauruses and idiom dictionaries to expand their vocabulary and to improve their writing.

This project expired on June 16, 2017.

My Students

At my school, the teachers, parents, and students work together to establish the best possible working and learning environment. I feel privileged to be part of a community that comes together to do what is best for kids and to be supported by a PTO that shows up daily to support the work going on in the classroom. Selfless decisions are made for the betterment of our school environment, and everyone contributes! Every day, I get to share my favorite stories with kids, and I get to see their faces light up when they connect to a character or a new idea. I also love to introduce them to beautiful, powerful, interesting words, and it is a thrill to see those words gradually appear in their writing!

"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." -Ludwig Wiggenstein

My Project

My third graders are growing by leaps and bounds in their writing! They are developing their own writer's voices, and they are including interesting details. One of the most obvious differences between strong and developing writers is their use of vocabulary.

Students who have a limited vocabulary, simply can't express their ideas as powerfully.

We have a handful of old thesauruses in our classroom, but they are woefully inadequate. The resources were designed for younger students and are lacking most of the words that my students seek. I would love to have additional, more advanced thesauruses for my students to use, as they strive to grow as writers. Having access to the idiom dictionary will also benefit my students in both their reading and writing.
