Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fourteen first graders are an energetic and inquisitive group. They are a crew of comedians, scientists, artists, and lifelong learners. We are a public charter school with a high English Language learner population and a significant portion receiving free or reduced price meals. Our school has a large proportion of students with ADHD or ADHD tendencies. This means that many of the children are easily distracted, often having too much energy that must be focused, and have difficulty staying on task.

My Project

I am seeking funding for alternative seating options for my classroom. "Bottom on the bottom, feet on the floor!" I say. "Four on the floor, please!"

My first graders are very wiggly!

Many of my students have difficulty sitting in traditional chairs. They are a very active group, some with ADHD tendencies, and often have an excess of energy. With these alternative seating options, my students will have a way to focus their additional energy and can focus more of their minds on their school work. Think about how often you, as an adult, may have difficulty working in an uncomfortable chair. It can be very distracting both to the student and his classmates around him. Though I make an effort to incorporate a variety of movement opportunities into my lessons, sitting at a desk to do classwork is an unavoidable fact. I have students that stand up for most of our time at our desks. I have students that almost never have their feet on the floor. I have students that fall out of their chairs frequently, often because they rock backwards in them.

The balance balls will benefit those students that often rock backwards. The wobble cushions are great for those students who need to balance and for core strengthening. The chair bands will help keep some students' feet busy so they are not kicking, rocking, or climbing.
