Four teachers received 2 iPads each for their ESOL classes. And every teacher used them differently!\r\n\r\nIn two middle school ESOL classrooms, the iPads were used by students to do research on famous people and events, followed by class presentations. They were also used to give students access to the IXL app for ESOL which helped prepare students for the annual WIDA test in reading, writing, listening and speaking. This test demonstrates English language proficiency levels. The upper elementary teacher used the iPads to record scripted student conversations and played them back for the class over time to demonstrate growth in both confidence and English fluency. Students also put on recorded puppet shows and then filmed videos welcoming new language learners to the school. In the primary grades the students were able to access the Imagine Learning app to grow their English vocabulary and early literacy skills. \r\n\r\nWithout your support, none of this would have been possible! Beginning next school\r\nyear, the iPads and language apps will be used as a center so that the teachers can focus on small-group teaching and learning in rotation. \r\n\r\nOnce again, we cannot thank you enough for your generosity. The impact has been enormous. Five students who never engaged in the reading lessons now give 100% effort because they are motivated to read these books independently. They are no longer afraid to try and make mistakes; they even volunteer to read in front of each other! Twenty-five of my other students ask to check these books out of our \"library\" and they practice reading them at home until they can read the stories aloud smoothly to their younger brothers and sisters. I have some middle school students stopping by to switch out phonics books; they are so proud of being able to read and understand what they are reading in English. \r\n\r\nThe graphic novels and large-print chapter books have by far been the favorites. One book (Zac the Yak) I use regularly under the document camera so the students can see the pages on the big screen; we read and discuss the comics together as a class. This is the first time I have used a phonics reader this way and my students are engaged and motivated to be the first to sound out the words. Having large-sized print and only one or two sentences per page makes it manageable and within my students' locus of control. The engagement in reading has skyrocketed.\r\n\r\nI am very excited to start next school year with these materials. As my students progress and become successful readers, I will celebrate their achievements and be thankful that we have the ability to meet them at their reading levels. The visual support has helped them better understand story structure and vocabulary, which is translating into improved comprehension and more thoughtful written responses.
