They were very happy to receive their own notebooks. We have used the notebooks in an interactive way while learning about the ways that authors write. \r\n\r\n Most enjoyable was the figurative language unit. The students were able to cut and paste notes, create colorful notes with annotations and use foldables to help them study what they have learned. They created idiom pictures and onomatopoeia comic strips all in English. These activities have given them a joy for writing which they never had before. \r\n\r\n We have begun reading non-fiction and are examining the structure of various texts. The students have symbols for the different types of text structure that they draw in their notebooks along with their notes. It has been a great experience for myself as well. When students open a book, they enter worlds that spark imagination, build empathy, and strengthen their sense of identity. Each page they turn helps them practice focus, curiosity, and perseverance. For many of our students, holding a physical book feels empowering: it's something that belongs to them, something they can return to again and again. The simple act of reading independently each day becomes a quiet routine that shapes confidence and academic growth.\r\n\r\nTurning pages also changes lives because it builds lifelong readers. As students explore new genres, discover favorite authors, and talk about books with their peers, reading shifts from an assignment to a habit—and then to a passion. They begin to see themselves as thinkers, storytellers, and problem-solvers. Books become tools for understanding the world and their place in it. Every chapter completed is a reminder that they are capable of tackling larger challenges, both in school and beyond.\r\n\r\nUltimately, turning pages is an invitation to growth. It opens doors to opportunities students might never have imagined and gives them the language, empathy, and resilience to navigate their future. When we put books into children's hands and time into their day, we don't just teach literacy—we transform lives one page at a time.","fullyFundedDate":1759595427490,"projectUrl":"project/turning-pages-changing-lives/9768426/","projectTitle":"Turning Pages, Changing Lives","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. New","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9935396"},{"teacherId":9305084,"projectId":9251884,"letterContent":",\r\nOn behalf of Oak creek charter school, I want to extend our sincere gratitude for your generous donation of colored powder for our K–8 Color Run. Using them as real-time scoreboards during sparring has helped students immediately understand how their techniques, timing, and strategy affect the match. This kind of instant feedback keeps them engaged and allows them to make quick adjustments—something that's much harder to do without technology. Being able to pause, replay, and analyze training footage together has also deepened their understanding of form, balance, and movement in a way traditional instruction alone can't.\r\n\r\nWhat excites my students most is seeing themselves on the screen. They love breaking down their patterns, spotting improvements, and setting new goals based on what they see. It has sparked more discussion, teamwork, and peer coaching than ever before. A few of my competitive athletes have especially embraced this new tool—they stay after class to rewatch clips, study footwork, and compare their techniques to professional matches we can now easily stream.\r\n\r\nThis technology has truly elevated our training environment, making it feel more like a professional dojang and giving my students the advanced resources they deserve. For many students, seeing their achievements showcased so prominently was the first time they truly felt the impact of their hard work reflected back at them.\r\n\r\nThe timing of this project could not have been more meaningful. During the summer of 2025, four of my athletes traveled across the country to compete at the USA Taekwondo National Championships. They returned with three gold medals and three bronze medals—an extraordinary accomplishment for our team and our school. Those medals now sit proudly in the new display case your generosity made possible. Every student at Oak Creek Charter School walks past this case daily, and it has quickly become a point of inspiration for athletes and non-athletes alike.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, the display case has become a living part of our Taekwondo program. Students are already setting new goals, working on more advanced forms, and preparing for the upcoming competition season with renewed motivation. Knowing that their achievements will have a permanent place in our school has added a new level of pride and accountability to their training. Your support has not only honored the accomplishments of these young athletes, but it has also energized their journey forward. We used the new décor to create a bright and welcoming environment that made our room feel more joyful and inviting during our lessons. The updated space has helped students stay more focused and calm, especially during transitions between activities or when working independently. It's amazing how much a comfortable classroom environment can support students' mindset and engagement.\r\n\r\nOne of the best parts of this project has been how it encouraged collaboration and shared ownership of the learning space. Students worked together to help arrange the decorations, offering suggestions and helping each other choose placements that felt balanced and meaningful. This turned into a small team-building moment in itself, where students took pride in making the classroom feel special. The process helped build a stronger sense of community, and students now regularly reference \"our room\" with a sense of belonging.\r\n\r\nAs we continue with our physical science and biology units, we will be building on this atmosphere by having students create their own mini-displays and informational posters to add to our themed areas around the room. This is helping students see the classroom as not just a place where they learn, but a place they help shape. The bright posters and organized board displays have helped create a more welcoming and purposeful learning environment. We've been using the visuals to support our current units by referring to them during discussions and classwork. For example, while learning about cell organelles, students pointed to the labeled diagrams on the wall to help compare the structure and function of each part. These references have helped students make stronger connections without feeling overwhelmed.\r\n\r\nThe students were excited when they first walked in and saw the updated space. Many of them commented that it looked \"more like a real science class\" and said the visuals made it easier for them to stay focused. Some students who usually hesitate to participate have been more confident in raising their hands because the posters give them something to double-check or guide their thinking before responding.\r\n\r\nAs we continue our lessons, the classroom decorations will serve as ongoing support during labs, note-taking, and review activities. The space now encourages curiosity and conversation, and students are more engaged because the room reflects the learning we are doing every day. Many of our science concepts—such as cell structures, chemical reactions, energy flow, and experimental data—become much clearer when students can see them in accurate, engaging color. Before we had this printer, diagrams and lab sheets were often printed in black and white, which made it harder for students to distinguish important details. Now, students are able to highlight observations, compare models, and create lab reports that look more professional and meaningful to them.\r\n\r\nWhat has been most exciting for students is the ability to create and print their own scientific models, posters, and interactive foldables. They enjoy taking ownership of their learning, and the color printer has turned simple assignments into opportunities for creativity and pride. One group recently printed color-coded diagrams of atoms and molecules for a class gallery walk, and they were so excited to see their work displayed in such a vibrant, polished way. Several students who are typically quieter in class have become more engaged because they now feel more confident sharing their work visually.\r\n\r\nOverall, the color printer has helped bring science to life. It has allowed students to better visualize complex ideas and express their understanding in ways that feel meaningful and personalized.
