My students need additional seating alternatives to facilitate optimum learning and accommodate various needs. The Wobble Chairs and Yoga Balls will be perfect for meeting their needs.
I teach a gifted cluster class of fifth graders, which consists of both students who have been identified as gifted as well as students who have demonstrated a need for higher level learning opportunities. In addition to meeting the needs of gifted learners, my class often includes students with ADHD, autism, anxiety, sensory issues, etc., who also require special accommodations. Students with these disabilities, as well as highly gifted students, often share similar behavioral characteristics. In many cases, gifted students have other conditions which affect learning.
What many of these children have in common is a need to have flexibility and choice, both physically and educationally.
Studies have shown that that when the body is moving, the brain is more engaged. This is especially true for my students, as their brains are driven to seek stimulation, often including physical movement. Too often these children are expected to conform to a standard and often antiquated view of education. If not required to adhere to "one size fits all" expectations, then these children can truly thrive and reach their full potential.
My Project
I am endeavoring to provide options that better suit the needs of my students. I want them to have seating that is comfortable, flexible, and inviting. I hope to provide alternative seating choices such as wobble stools and yoga balls, which allow for a limited range of movement while sitting, thus keeping the brain engaged. I have already included desks at standing height and yoga mats as alternatives in my classroom, which the students love.
If this project is fully funded, with your help, our classroom can be transformed into a welcoming environment where students can be free of the confines of a standard desk and chair, and awaken their bodies and minds.
I believe that kids should be given choices and be taught how to make them responsibly. Alternative seating has become one of many tools I use to help ingrain "with choice comes responsibility" into the minds of my pupils. They will learn more about themselves, their strengths and weaknesses, preferences, and what works and what doesn't. They will know more about how to determine a "smart seat" for their optimal learning experience at appropriate times. With boundaries in place, expectations made clear, and opportunities afforded, they will experience exponential growth in fifth grade!
