Enthusiastic, energetic, empathetic, creative, inclusive and motivated are a few words that come to mind when thinking about the young learners in my class. Our class is comprised of eighteen, amazing, transitional kindergartners. Within the class, there are gifted and talented students, students with disabilities and English language learners. Despite this, the school has received academic achievement awards the past six years. It is a California Distinguished School and a School For Advanced Studies.
"The innocence of children is what makes them stand out as a shining example to the rest of mankind." -Kurt Chambers
These accomplishments are due to the strong partnership between school and home, and we would love to throw the community into the mix, too. This is a school where high academic standards are maintained for all students in a safe and nurturing environment. The faculty and staff are lifelong learners themselves and foster that love of learning in their students. The faculty and staff work hard to ensure that the record of achievement continues.
My Project
Prompting kids to dream about what they want to be when they grow up will help them to think about more than just the present and is a perfect opportunity to talk about financial literacy. Industries change fast so it is very possible that the jobs our kids end up in as adults haven’t even been invented yet–crazy right!?!
In this project, we will mainly focus on being scientists, but there are so many jobs the sky is the limit.
Whatever they chose, I want them to realize that wishing to be something doesn’t make it happen.
I will have my students think about what they want to be when they grow up and then I ask them what kind of goals they would need to reach before they could become their desired profession.
Then we will talk about why we become something and the kids said so we can buy things and eat food. I think that thinking about the “why” makes reaching the goals more important.
From there we will practice being scientists while wearing our lab coats and recording information in our Science notebooks. This will help expose them at a young age to a different career choice many probably never thought of.
