What's In Your Mouth?

My students need 5 supplies to create petri dishes with growth medium to see what is growing in their mouths.

My Students

Can I have a drink of that? Why share a drink if you won't share your tooth brush? Most students don't know that there is bacteria living in their mouths and all around them that could be harmful.

My school educates approximately 600 seventh and eighth graders each year.

We are located in Arkansas and are considered to have a moderate poverty level. Our students are from all different ethnic backgrounds. I will have up to 150 eighth graders this year that come to me with high expectations for success.

My Project

Students will engage in an experiment to find out how bacteria are related to oral health. They will use the cotton swab to scrape a sample from the inside of their cheeks and smear it onto the growth ready petri dish. They will let it sit in a dark place overnight and check the results the following day. Students will be surprised to find out how fast bacteria cultures grow. Then we will discuss why good oral hygiene is important and diseases associated with poor oral hygiene. Students will also learn about other ways that bacteria can be spread from your mouth such as drinking after someone, eating after someone, and even kissing.

Do you remember your first kiss?

Did you know that you were swapping bacteria with your significant other? Well, thirteen and fourteen year-olds tend to be very naive and not realize that their mouths are breeding grounds for bacteria. This experiment will wake up students to the dangers of kissing along with sharing food, drinking after each other, and the importance of brushing their teeth.
