Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"We are never done learning" is the quote that we live by in my classroom. This quote graces the wall in big black letters so we always remember, no matter how old, we never stop gaining knowledge. This is why I want so badly to be able to surround my students with the richest reading materials.

We are part of a very large urban school district with a very diverse student population (62% African American, 27% Caucasian, 10% Hispanic).

Our curriculum is very unique. Our school is a Spanish immersion program, where students receive half of their academic instruction completely in Spanish and the other half completely in English. Most of our students are not native Spanish speakers. This is a public school and almost 85% of our student population is considered to be economically disadvantaged. These students are motivated by high interest material and material that relates directly to them or their culture. They are funny and endearing. They appreciate books that delve deeper and require higher level thinking. They are masters of discussion, which is a huge part of my teaching style. It is imperative that they have some connection with the book they are reading.

My Project

These resources will allow students to have choice and power over their reading, something that is very important. Many of these resources relate directly to our curriculum or students' culture. With these resources, not only will students be able to self select them for personal enjoyment, I will also be able to use them as part of my teaching in Writer's Workshop and Social Studies units. For example, with the Lottery Rose book set I am requesting, students read and discuss different social issues raised in the book. They will use ideas presented in this book to create public service announcements to raise awareness about important social issues such as domestic violence, child abuse, learning disabilities, and many more. They use iMovie to create and edit their videos to submit for public viewing.

I urge you to donate to this project to help students use reading to empower their own writing, their own learning, and their own personal enjoyment.

These students deserve to have this kind of knowledge and resource at their fingertips right inside the classroom.
